typing in

(%i1) 1$2$3$4$

leads to :

(%i2)
(%i3)
(%i4)
(%i5)

I am using $ to supress output and be able to view more formula on screen, xmaxima still prints one line per command (command line maxima does not do this)

This is not a bug, it is a feature request, because the system is acting as designed. Changing category.

"$" is not supposed to "supress output completely", e.g.

    (%i1) print(hello)$
    hello
