Why not using the 'sharex' keywork argument of subplot function? from matplotlib.pyplot import subplot S1 = subplot(311) S2 = subplot(312, sharex=S1) S3 = subplot(313, sharex=S1) S1, S2 and S3 will share the same xrange.
