You can make the tick lines invisible like so

for line in ax.get_xticklines() + ax.get_yticklines():
   line.set_visible(False)

This is presuming you want ticklabels but not lines.  If you are
willing to dispense with both, it is easier to simply

 ax.set_xticks([])
 ax.set_yticks([])
