The problem is:
i cannot compile atlas (stable 3.6.0 or develop 3.7.3)
neither from freebsd`s Ports nor from the sourse with
following:

STAGE 2-1-2: CacheEdge DETECTION
make -f Makefile INSTALL_LOG/atlas_cacheedge.h pre=d
2>&1 | ./xatlas_tee INSTALL_LOG/dMMCACHEEDGE.LOG
cd /usr/tmp/ATLAS/tune/blas/gemm/FreeBSD_PIIISSE1 ;
make res/atlas_cacheedge.h pre=d
`res/atlas_cacheedge.h' is up to date.
cp
/usr/tmp/ATLAS/tune/blas/gemm/FreeBSD_PIIISSE1/res/atlas_cacheedge.h
/usr/tmp/ATLAS/include/FreeBSD_PIIISSE1/.
cp
/usr/tmp/ATLAS/tune/blas/gemm/FreeBSD_PIIISSE1/res/atlas_cacheedge.h
INSTALL_LOG/.
ERROR 573 DURING CACHE EDGE DETECTION!!.
cd ../.. ; make error_report arch=FreeBSD_PIIISSE1
make -f Make.top error_report arch=FreeBSD_PIIISSE1

Also, i have this:
# ./xdfindCE
TA TB M N K alpha beta
CacheEdge TIME MFLOPS
== == ====== ====== ====== ====== ======
========= ========= ========

Killed

# uname -a
FreeBSD ratcave 4.9-RELEASE-p1 FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE-p1
#0: Wed May 26 05:20:13 MSD 2004
root@ratcave:/usr/src/sys/compile/MY i386

    Hmm. Do you have limited memory or CPU usage built into
    your OS? It looks almost as if the OS is killing the
    CacheEdge Probe. This does indeed use a lot of memory by
    default.

    If indeed it is the OS killing the probe, we can skip the
    probe my manually supplying CacheEdge in the arch defaults.
    If you want to do this, you can set it to the setting
    suggested:
    http://math-atlas.sourceforge.net/errata.html#tuneCE
    If you want to do this and need more directions, let me
    know, and I can provide.

    Cheers,
    Clint
