Hi, still in a release manager mood from today's first release of GeoExt (http://geoext.org/), which is definitely something to check out for Mapbuilder users, I would like to make a proposal: Today I closed some tickets for the 1.5 milestone, including an update to OpenLayers 2.8, which brings a lot of improvements. As you now, Mapbuilder 1.5rc2 is based on OpenLayers 2.6. Since we have promised to release Mapbuilder 1.5, I think it is time now to finally do that. I built Mapbuilder from current trunk today, and put it online on http://nightly.communitymapbuilder.org/mapbuilder/. I would like to tag this for 1.5rc3, announce the release candidate, wait a few days for feedback / bug reports, and then do the final release of Mapbuilder 1.5 I am +1, how about others? Regards, Andreas. |

Andreas, Thanks for the tip!!! Adding the resolutions to the mappaneol config file now allows me to cache within MapBuilder 1.5. I now can display over a million features in 1-3 seconds. Thanks, John On Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 7:37 AM, Andreas Hocevar <aho...@op...>wrote: > Hey John, > > I can only share my experiences with TileCache here, which does the > same as GeoWebCache, and this works fine with Mapbuilder 1.5. > > Two things you have to take care of: > > * You have to add a <resolutions> list in the mappaneol config, and > put in there a comma separated list of the resolutions you get from > GeoWebCache's GetCapabilities. > > * The extent of your map must be the same as reported by GeoWebCache's > GetCapabilities, and you have to make sure that > displayOutsideMaxExtent is set to false (or not included) in the > mappaneol config. > > Regards, > Andreas. > > On Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 12:23 AM, John Mitchell <mit...@gm...> > wrote: > > Hi, > > > > GeoWebCache (a WMS tile-caching program) is now built-in to GeoServer > 1.7.1 > > and works with Openlayers tiling but MapBuilder 1.5 (rc1) tiling errors > off > > when the WMS request is sent to GeoWebCache. > > > > Will upgrading to MapBuilder 1.5 (rc2) or the final version MapBuilder > 1.5 > > (when it comes out) cause MapBuilder to generate tiles like the open > layers > > demo within GeoServer 1.7.1? > > > > The error is listed below: > > > > 400: Resolution (2.5111607142858094E-4) is not with 5.0% of the closest > grid > > resolution (1.71661376953125E-4) > > > > Below is the explanation of the error from the GeoWebCache website > > documentation: > > > > Your bounds in the W direction are offset by more than 5% compared to the > > underlying grid. ¶ > > > > Your bounds in the y direction are offset by more than 5% compared to the > > underlying grid. > > > > This means tile size is correct (within 5%), but your request if not > aligned > > to the grid that GeoWebCache uses. Hey John, I can only share my experiences with TileCache here, which does the same as GeoWebCache, and this works fine with Mapbuilder 1.5. Two things you have to take care of: * You have to add a <resolutions> list in the mappaneol config, and put in there a comma separated list of the resolutions you get from GeoWebCache's GetCapabilities. * The extent of your map must be the same as reported by GeoWebCache's GetCapabilities, and you have to make sure that displayOutsideMaxExtent is set to false (or not included) in the mappaneol config. Hi, GeoWebCache (a WMS tile-caching program) is now built-in to GeoServer 1.7.1 and works with Openlayers tiling but MapBuilder 1.5 (rc1) tiling errors off when the WMS request is sent to GeoWebCache. Will upgrading to MapBuilder 1.5 (rc2) or the final version MapBuilder 1.5 (when it comes out) cause MapBuilder to generate tiles like the open layers demo within GeoServer 1.7.1? The error is listed below: <http://geowebcache.org/> 400: Resolution (2.5111607142858094E-4) is not with 5.0% of the closest grid resolution (1.71661376953125E-4) Below is the explanation of the error from the GeoWebCache website documentation: Your bounds in the W direction are offset by more than 5% compared to the underlying grid. ¶<http://geowebcache.org/trac/wiki/openlayers#YourboundsintheWdirectionareoffsetbymorethan5comparedtotheunderlyinggrid.> Your bounds in the y direction are offset by more than 5% compared to the underlying grid. This means tile size is correct (within 5%), but your request if not aligned to the grid that GeoWebCache <http://geowebcache.org/trac/wiki/GeoWebCache>uses. OpenLayers? <http://geowebcache.org/trac/wiki/OpenLayers> can use the extent of the map, layer or some other parameters to automatically calculate this. The key thing is to provide maxExtent: new OpenLayers.Bounds(minx, miny, maxx, maxy) such that the values align to the grid of GWC. Basically this consists of taking the map zoomed all the way out (1 tile in EPSG:900913, 2 tiles in EPSG:4326) and then continuously dividing each tile into 4 equally sized tiles. The edges of these tiles represent the grid at each zoomlevel. Thanks, John -- John J. Mitchell |

I am trying to load two separate contexts one being a WMC and the other being a OWS with just a google maps base layer? Basically I have an initial context that a heavily modified version of MapBuilder uses (WMC) and I want to replace the Demis base map with a Google base map. Is this possible or is there an easier way to do this? Thanks in advance, Rob |

Hello list, Hereby the Eulogy for mapbuilder as spoken at the opening of the Foss4G conference in Cape Town; Hi, My name is Steven Ottens and I'm speaking on behalve of the mapbuilder steering committee. It is with sadness in our heart that we've announced that Mapbuilder is no more. It is today exactly 7 years ago that Cameron Shorter posted his first mail on the Mapbuilder mailinglist. He set apart his idea for a community mapbuilder which would provide a way to collaboratively build maps. Years later this idea would be proposed again in a different setting resulting in OpenStreetMap. It took a while for Camerons idea to turn into mapbuilder code. The intial idea was to create an applet and energy was put into the GeoTools project to support OGC standards. However applets became a thing of the past and Raj Singh created a prototype in a new technique that years later would become known as AJAX. It was already 2003 and during the christmas holidays the first implementation of Mapbuilder was created. Still it would be a few more months before the first release. Once the first release was out, more people got attracted to the project. The already strong support for open standards was increased by various people. Mike Adair wrote the support for WMS-timeseries. Pat Cappelaere wrote the first ever SVG based vector renderer for webgis. Olivier Terral created an SLD editor upon Pats work. Also Mike Adair and Richard Greenwood started the javascript projection library. Already we are moving into 2006. This year will go down in history as the beginning of the end of mapbuilder. A lot happened in 2006, it began early that year with the founding of OSGeo, which Mapbuilder joined as one of its founding projects. The power of OSGeo became clear during the summer of 2006. People from different projects got together to discuss project-transcending isues in foss4g land. The foss4g conference that year saw the birth of the tiling standard and the decission to use OpenLayers as /the/ render engine for webmapping clients. Andreas Hocevar took lead in stitching OpenLayers and mapbuilder together. With incredible support of the openlayers developercommunity there was a first release in less than six months. Mapbuilder had many features OpenLayers was lacking in those days. The mapbuilder developers contributed lots of code to the openlayers project to make sure that all that functionality would still work once openlayers became the backend. To fully merge all Mapbuilders functionality with OpenLayers took another year. Once that work was done it became clear that OpenLayers was attracting many Mapbuilder developers and users. We found it increasingly difficult to tell the difference between OpenLayers and Mapbuilder. The powerful XML based MVC design was at the same time its weakness. Over the years AJAX development had became mainstream and the developer tools favored pure javascript implementations like the one from OpenLayers. In that fateful conference in Lausanne we already spoke out our hope that one day we would merge into one open source webgis client. When we saw OpenLayers flourish under the OSGeo flag we decided that our time had come. We set out to create a client where you could access maps and add your own data to share with others. If you go to the openstreetmap site you will see openlayers as the client to access the maps and add your own data. In a sense we have reached our goal. In the meantime mapbuilder has touched many more people who are still active contributers to foss4g. It set a standard in standard complience and many of its ideas live on in different projects. So while we are sad to announce that we stop our active development of Mapbuilder, we see a bright future for the foss4g community. We hope that our example will help others to join their efforts where possible, creating a powerfull foss4g software stack. signed the project steering committee, Andreas Hocevar Cameron Shorter Gertjan van Oosten Linda Derezinski Matt Diez Mike Adair Olivier Terral Patrice Cappalaere Steven M. Hi Jan, Before you start, you might want to know that us Mapbuilder developers have announced an End-Of-Life announcement for Mapbuilder: http://communitymapbuilder.org/display/MAP/EndOfLife And we recommend that most people would be wiser to consider Openlayers instead. However, if you are still keen to continue with Mapbuilder, I'd suggest looking at the WFS widgets which provide similar functionality to what I suspect you are looking for. I'm planning to implement some adittions to mapbuilder, such as fundamental SOS functions like GetObservation, GetFeaturOfInterest... to build up a webbased viewer like these http://www.hnd.bayern.de/. There should be a ground layer and in adittion some geometric Features (GetFeatureOfInterest) witch offering timerelevant information (GetObservation) if needed. Now my question: are there any solutions, diskussions or implementations to these SOS functions. Thank you in advance for your attention. Jan |

Hi, I just tested the new Firebug 1.2.0 release with the latest Firefox 3.1a2pre trunk build, and everything works fine! I think it is time now to start the 1.5 release cycle. We need test reports of all our examples in FF3 and IE7. Testers are welcome! Cameron or Matt: can you please give me a short intro on the osgeo server where our demos are hosted? I could not figure out where everything is. It would be awesome if we could release before FOSS4G. Regards, Andreas. |

Hi, I am implementing a Geospatial Digital Rights Management application based on a service oriented architecture. (OGC Document - GeoDRM Engineering Viewpoint) On the client side I would like to use Mapbuilder but need some help fitting that into the overall architecture. The WMS server used is GeoServer and a suite of services proxy the requests coming from the user (web browser) and authenticate and authorize the user before sending the request to GeoServer. All these services including the GeoServer are deployed on the same Tomcat server. In this architecture, there is no direct commmunication between the client(Mapbuilder) and GeoServer but has to go through the Authentication, License Manager and Auhtorization services, each one redirecting the request to a different page, either a login page or a 'Terms of Use' page before sending the map image back to the browser. This makes it difficult to use Mapbuilder on the client side because of its use of the Web mapping context to make WMS requests. Although I would like to use other features of Mapbuilder such as the zoom and pan controls and the layer control as well. Is there any way to customize mapbuilder to meet the needs of my application and how complicated the customization would be? Basically I am looking to use the MapPaneOL widget and the button toolbar at the minimum. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Netra Patankar |

Mapbuilder developers, In the last IRC meeting with all PSC committee members (we were discussing how to retire mapbuilder), we all voted to add Markus Innerebner as a committer to mapbuilder, based on a review of contributions made by Markus. Markus has made such a patch, and Steven has reviewed it and committed it to svn. So I now welcome Markus Innerebner to the Mapbuilder community. Markus, Can you please email this list stating you accept the Mapbuilder software developer responsibilities outlined at: http://communitymapbuilder.org/display/MAP/Contributers+Guide Then set up an account in accordance with: Set up a subversion account in accordance with http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAP/SVN+Repository -- Cameron Shorter Geospatial Systems Architect Tel: +61 (0)2 8570 5050 Mob: +61 (0)419 142 254 Think Globally, Fix Locally Commercial Support for Geospatial Open Source Solutions http://www.lisasoft.com/LISAsoft/SupportedProducts.html |

mapbuilder users, If you have the opportunity, I strongly recommend these FOSS4G sessions (as described by Tim Sutton). FOSS4G is an amazing networking opportunity. There are few opportunities where you get to rub shoulders, discuss, ask questions, etc with the best Open Source Software developers face to face. And it is an impressive opportunity to show off your work. --- Free and Open Source Geospatial Conference 2008 (FOSS4G2008) FOSS4G2008 will be taking place this year in September / October this year in South Africa. FOSS4G is a an annual gathering place for Free and Open Source projects with a geospatial leaning. The conference venue is the Cape Town International Conference Center (CTICC) in the Foreshore area of Cape Town - the beautiful 'mother city' of South Africa. Demo Sessions: ======================= We will be holding a demo theatre during tea breaks and lunch times. Demos are a great way to show off your work to decision makers, GIS professionals and fellow code crunchers. The demos will be restricted to 10 minutes each (including questions and setup time) so they need to be brief and to the point. If you would like to demo your project, something you have achieved with FOSS geospatial, or anything else relevant to a geospatial practitioner audience, you can register by following the instructions provided on the demo wiki page here: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G2008_Demos Lightning Talks: ======================= During the plenary session on Monday 29 July, there will be eight lightning talks of 5 minutes each. Time limits will be strictly adhered to and we are looking for the most entertaining, thought provoking and informative speeches possible. The speeches will be presented to the entire conference. If you are interested in making a lightning speech, or know of any good candidates to give such a speech, please visit the lightning talks wiki page to register your interest here: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G2008_LightningTalks Code Sprint: ======================= We will be holding an all day code sprint on Saturday 4 October - the day following the end of the main conference activities. Given that most FOSS projects are conducted as virtual collaborations over the internet, the code sprint is a rare opportunity for you to get together in person with other developers in your project. The code sprint is also a great opportunity for those who are interested in getting involved in a project to go and meet the developers face to face and get some help in getting started with development. If you are not a developer, but interested in other aspects of project development, (documentation, creating demonstrator implementations of software etc.) the code sprint is an equally good opportunity to collaborate. We will provide a venue, lunch and refreshments, internet connection and flip charts. If you have other special requirements let us know and we will see what we can do. In order to provide the very best experience for you it would be helpful to get an idea of how many people are likely to attend. We have created a Wiki page at: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G2008_CodeSprint On this page you can create a section for your project and list the people planning to attend. The page also provides a space to help you organise your code sprint day by writing up the goals and preparation work needed for your sprint. Contact Info: ======================= The code sprint, lightning talks & demo session organiser is Tim Sutton (ti...@li...) - if you have any questions or special requirements, please don't hesitate to ask. If you haven't already registered for the conference, we advise doing so as soon as possible to secure your place.
