Sounds like the traffic was probably going through your wired card.
If you get the interface up again, and connected to an access point, you'll
probably need to something like:

su
route add default ath0

and if you have a net gateway:

route add default gw gateway's ip address.

How about if you dont? Does it work when you plug it in after boot?
Sometime hotplugging works better than 'cold' plugging.

There's a script in our source repository which will uninstall the modules
for you. It isn't linked in to the Makefiles yet, but will be soon.
