It is in fact a limitation of the 802.11 standard. The master only knows the client's MAC address, and won't accept packets from non-associated stations. To bridge two LANs, you either need some tricky 'MAC masquerading' that hides the complete LAN behind the client's MAC address, or you have to set up a WDS link that uses four-address frames for transporting packets over the WLAN.
