I am a fairly new to Linux, so forgive me for this question that
probably has a simple answer. I am running Mepis on a new Toshiba
laptop, with the atheros 5211 chip in it. I downloaded madwifi as a deb
package and installed it. When i try to load the modules ath_hal loads.
When I type "modprobe wlan" the computer sits for about 30 seconds and
the goes to a prompt. When I run modprobe ath_pci it says
"/lib/modules/2.4.22/net/ath_pci.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/netath_pci.o: insmod ath_pci failed"
I think your patch may help me but I'm not really sure how to install it
or what to do with what you attached. I'm not really sure how I got as
far as I have, I'v just been messin around with it all day. Thank in
advance for any help you can give me.

I don't think so. The patch has been made to correct API changes that
occured in kernel 2.6.10. Your kernel version is 2.4.22 (which is rather
old, by the way) and should be supported without any changes to madwifi,
given that you use a recent version.
Please detail a little more how you installed the driver. Did you
compile it by hand or did you install it with the packet manager of your
distribution? Is the wlan card shown in the output of "lspci"?
