Hi, I am working with the atheros card in ad-hoc mode, and have a variant of Andrew McGregors code. A look at tools/athstats shows that the card is generating lots of crcerr and phyerr errors. For a sample of athstats 1 input output altrate short long xretry crcerr crypt phyerr rssi rate 23554 10 0 0 11 1 13676321 0 25181785 9 0M 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 0M 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 0M 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 0M A look at ifconfig, [root@dhcp54 tools]# ifconfig ath0 ath0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:05:31:71:08 inet addr:192.168.210.210 Bcast:192.168.210.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:23594 errors:13676321 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:13676321 TX packets:10 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:199 RX bytes:1760391 (1.6 Mb) TX bytes:619 (619.0 b) Interrupt:10 Memory:d08e8000-d08f8000 It is as though every frame received by my driver is tagged as having a crcerror and phyerror. Yet, and this is the bit I don't understand, if you run the latest etheral on a non atheros card, and examine the full packet (frame headers included) there is no mention of crcerrors or physical errors. So, my question is:: What explanation would account for the crcerror and phyerr reports ? Derek- What kind of atheros card is this? (I've been seeing reports of 5212's doing this over longer links, wondering if you're seeing something similar...) -Darrell On Jul 18, 2004, at 6:07 PM, Derek Smithies wrote: > Hi, > I am working with the atheros card in ad-hoc mode, and have a variant > of > Andrew McGregors code. > > A look at tools/athstats shows that the card is generating lots of > crcerr > and phyerr errors. > For a sample of athstats 1 > > input output altrate short long xretry crcerr crypt phyerr > rssi rate > 23554 10 0 0 11 1 13676321 0 > 25181785 9 0M > 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 > 9 0M > 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 > 9 0M > 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 > 9 0M > > A look at ifconfig, > > [root@dhcp54 tools]# ifconfig ath0 > ath0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:05:31:71:08 > inet addr:192.168.210.210 Bcast:192.168.210.255 > Mask:255.255.255.0 > UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 > RX packets:23594 errors:13676321 dropped:0 overruns:0 > frame:13676321 > TX packets:10 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 > collisions:0 txqueuelen:199 > RX bytes:1760391 (1.6 Mb) TX bytes:619 (619.0 b) > Interrupt:10 Memory:d08e8000-d08f8000 > > It is as though every frame received by my driver is tagged as having a > crcerror and phyerror. > > Yet, and this is the bit I don't understand, if you run the latest > etheral > on a non atheros card, and examine the full packet (frame headers > included) there is no mention of crcerrors or physical errors. > > So, my question is:: > What explanation would account for the crcerror and phyerr reports ? > > Derek. > ======================================================================= > -- > Derek Smithies Ph.D. This PC runs pine on > linux for email > IndraNet Technologies Ltd. Hi, sorry, I should have included this information. Apologies to all.. Mini-PCI card SL-5354 MP Aries lspci -vv 01:09.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 168c:0013 (rev 01) Subsystem: D-Link System Inc: Unknown device 3203 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV+ VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Latency: 168 (2500ns min, 7000ns max), cache line size 08 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 10 Region 0: Memory at ff8f0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0-,D1-,D2-,D3hot-,D3cold-) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=2 PME- ========================================== Now, from the lspci info, 01:09.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 168c:0013 (rev 01) 0x168c is /* Atheros PCI vendor ID */ #define AR5212_DEVID 0x0013 /* Final ar5212 devid */ Now, I have a 5212. My links are quite short (<30 metres in a building). ================================= Further work has shown that a listening device (different manufacturer, running ethereal) which is capturing the entire frame reports no errors at all. This implies either that there is some race condition in the receive process, and frames are being mangled when received. that the frames are malformed in the transmit process, and my listener is only reporting the good frames.
