Ticket #1994 reports about problems with resolving anything that's in
the madwifi.org zone. The cause for this issue is obviously another outage
of the authoritative DNS servers.
I've already informed the admin of said nameservers about the issue, and
will try to also call him by phone later (it's only 6:30am there
currently). However, depending on whether I'm successful to catch him and
how fast he can resolve the root cause, chances are that over time more
and more of our users will be affected by this issue.
As a workaround, you could add the following entries to /etc/hosts:
=== cut ===
=== cut ===
(Yes, lists.madwifi.org has a different IP, this is no typo)
I will keep you posted. Thanks for your patience.
PS: Yes, we've been through this several times already. Since the last
outage we have a third nameserver in place. However, unfortunately that
nameserver has not yet been added as authoritative nameserver for the
madwifi.org zonefile. I will explain that in a separate thread on
I am not affiliated with EditDNS.org in any other way, than I'm a happy
user of their services.
I host my own authoritative dns server for molgaard.org, and have them
as "backup dns" hosts. They do also, however, offer to have one's dns
fully hosted by them.
I am using it free of charge, which puts a limit on certain advanced
services (don't know which), but if those aren't needed, I suggest you
take a look.
The most likely way for the world to be destroyed, most experts agree,
is by accident. That's where we come in; we're computer
professionals. We cause accidents.

Obviously the two DNS servers are now back up again. Thanks for your
I have no response from the admin so far, and thus don't know anything
about the reason for the outage. I have called him five or six times
during the past days, and left several messages on his mailbox asking for
feedback via e-mail or by phone. Delivery of two mails I've sent him has
been denied by the receiving mailserver: "you will be invoiced and
prosecuted by law for $200 for each unwanted email you send to us,you have
now been notified".
The only thing I can tell so far is that the nameservers now have
different IPs, presumably they have moved.
I'm currently moving to a different city. As soon as I'm finished and set
up at the new place, I will try to negotiate with said admin about ways to
improve availability of madwifi.org name services. (See also for some
background information on the "status quo"))
