I'm currently use lxpanel in Mandriva. There is follwoing menu item in applications.menu:

<Menu>
<Name>Applications</Name>
<Layout>
<Menuname>Internet</Menuname>
<Menuname>Office</Menuname>
<Menuname>Graphics</Menuname>
<Menuname>SoundVideo</Menuname>
<Menuname>Tools</Menuname>
<Menuname>Development</Menuname>
<Menuname>Games</Menuname>
<Menuname>Education</Menuname>
<Menuname>Sciences</Menuname>
<Menuname>Documentation</Menuname>
<Merge type="menus"/>
<Merge type="files"/>
<Separator/>
<Filename>rpmdrake.desktop</Filename>
</Layout>
<!-- etc -->
</Menu>

but lxpanel menu does not show rpmdrake.desktop.

    We do this by design.
    The menu is not generated from applications.menu file.
    The menu spec on freedesktop.org is too complicated and requires
    very complicated xml parsing which is very inefficient and hard to implement.
    So, this is not a bug.
