I think the major problem I've seen in regards to sound on Windows was to switch sound driver to SDL in preferences and relaunch the application.

You mentioned clicking (and holding) on the LED on the preset track.
That is not the correct way.

Please launch the Piano Editor and play some notes there.
Or even shorter route: Double-click on the "Default preset" label.
This pops up an instrument window, which has mini piano keys at bottom.
Try playing keys around C6-C7.

IMHO reading the User Manual first will avoid much misery.
