Dont forget that we will have random bug fix releases in between

In Linux we already have that, it's called the package manager, and in
Windows it's not worth the effort.

Subversion Kills Productivity. Get off Subversion & Make the Move to Perforce.
With Perforce, you get hassle-free workflows. Merge that actually works.
Faster operations. Version large binaries.  Built-in WAN optimization and the
freedom to use Git, Perforce or both. Make the move to Perforce.

The "About" Menu item could have all the appropriate info, or the splash screen.
i.e.
New versions every quarter please go to
lmms.org/downloads/
to download the newest releases!

Alternatively, the person compiling the Windows/Mac binaries could easily add in a separate internal program that will check the system clock for the next quarter, or check github/sf/or our own website for a new version and display a special splash screen IF a new version is available, and show a new item in the menu to open a web link.  I am sure coding this would be a pain, but it might be worth it for the users that don't use GNU/Linux.  But it would have to be something someone REALLY wanted.... otherwise the current system is fine.  Alternatively, the downloads webpage could indicate the release schedule visably for visitors.
