I just followed the configure.html file in the doc/ directory.  I use
something like:

/usr/local/sbin/lircd -H atilibusb --device=/dev/lirc --output=/dev/lircd --pidfile=/var/run/lircd.pid --listen

take a look in the remotes/atiusb/ directory for a lircd.conf file.
And also make sure you don't have the ati_remote or lirc_atiusb
modules loaded - they'll bork things up if you use the userspace
driver.
