Hi Matti ,
Thanks for this update.
I am running lirc 0.8.6 , I will try this with the keyspan USB to serial adapter and an irblaster.info serial receiver . If it works I will email back to the group.

Using a Pinnacle TV remote, pinnacle tv receiver on a serial port
header, and a cheap pl2303 usb-to-serial adapter, I can now do lirc on
Ubuntu 9.10 without compiling.

 From the command line (as root) do:

lircd -n -H pinsys -d /dev/ttyUSB1

or in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf set these fields:

REMOTE_DRIVER="pinsys"
REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/ttyUSB1"
REMOTE_SOCKET=""
REMOTE_LIRCD_CONF="pinnacle_systems/lircd.conf.pctv"
LOAD_MODULES="false"

and then run
/etc/init.d/lirc start

It would be nice if you could update the FAQ - I was very dissapointed
when I read that this would not work.
