I am not familiar with the specific details of this application, but I bet
it has similar restrictions as the velocity-pressure formulation for the
incompressible (Navier-)Stokes problem. In that case you cannot choose the
same space for velocity and pressure without adding some form of
I have historically used the Taylor-Hood (Quadratic Velocity/Linear
Pressure) elements for incompressible flows. To see how this is implemented
in libMesh see example 13: http://libmesh.sourceforge.net/ex13.php
Any good text on the formulation should detail the stability question and
define stable spaces, if this indeed is the issue.

Subject: [Libmesh-users] mixed u-p formulation
does anybody know how to define the interpolation function of pressure for
the mixed displacement and pressure formulation?
