Hi, I was trying to run some sample program in C-language to understand how lib-braille works. Currently running in Ubuntu Linux and I am referring to the tutorial section in http://libbraille.org/tutorial/index.html<http://libbraille.org/tutorial/index.html#SECTION00020000000000000000> 1. From the downloaded dir when I run "./configure" it is giving error configure: error: libusb-config not found in /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games 2. I do not have a refreshable braille. So i am looking forward to use some emulator later. Can you please help in resolving the above error and give some sample make file/any other configuration file to quickly run a simple test. Thanks & regards, SijuSamuel |

Hello, I have a problem initializing libbraille, it seems that the display model "Braille Star 40" by Handy Tech is not supported. What can be done about this? Does anyone have a driver for this model? I intend to write a program (in C++ using Visual Studio 2008) that can be used by various users having different display models. The program should output text to the display and also take text input from the braille keys on the display, if present. It would be a problem if libbraile didn't support several new and frequently used display models like the Braille Star 40. Thanks very much for any help, Thomas Marquardt |

Hello, Firstly I will say I am not a developer of libbraille, but I may be able to help with some other suggestions. I can't remember whether libbraille supports bluetooth connections to a Braille display, but why not just try porting libbraille to the platform you are going to use? The alternative, and I know that this does support bluetooth and I think is more actively developed, have a look at brltty (sorry I don't have a web address for it but a web search should find it easily). Either try porting blrtty or may be you will be able to find out some useful information there. I would recommend trying to use one of libbraille or brltty, this will mean your application will support many Braille displays but you will not need to write all the drivers. Hi there, I'm trying to develop mobile phone applications that interact directly with a Braille display via BlueTooth. To do this, I need information about the protocols used by various Braille displays. I can't find this information anywhere, though. I was wondering how the developers of LibBraille were able to figure out how to interact with the Braille displays. If anyone else has some tips or advice, I'd really appreciate. I intend to make everything I develop free and open-source. Thank you! shiri |

Hi Marcus, thanks a lot for your help! Hi. I have translated the hotplug script, shipped with the latest libbraille package to an udev rules file. Maybe you want to deliver it with future releases. But I can't test the udev rules, because I haven't a braille display. Best regards Marcus |

Hi Michael, at least I now know I'm not completely crazy:) Regarding the com port. I use a usb->serial converter, for which I can specify the com port I want to use. I set to COM1 but that wasn't the default on my computer. You can change those in your hardware device manager thing. >From this point on I will contact the brltty mailing list. As a last resort I could try to get the thing working on OSX. I guess that should definitely work if the library works fine on Linux, since they're both Unix based. Thanks again. Hello, Now things have just puzzled me. I know I have had brltty working for me using an earlier version of brltty, but since then I have cleaned up my system and as brltty at the time wasn't of great use (at the time NVDA had no braille support) that got removed with other software. Now I downloaded brltty last night (from http://brl.thefreecat.org/brltty), but I have been unable to connect to my alva using it. I didn't try USB as I also had uninstal libusb-win32 when I did that clean up on my system, so I tried serial. connecting via serial you seem to be one step ahead of me, I was getting messages that it couldn't connect to serial:COM1, but it could be something else is wrong as when I tried to use window-eyes with my alva through a serial port (normally I use USB) it also didn't seem to be able to connect. Could I suggest that possibly trying the brltty mailing list might be an idea as that list is more active, and currently I cannot suggest more as I am not as far as you with brltty 3.10. As a note: brltty is so much easier on Linux, I don't even need to tell it my settings it just gets it automatically. I will let you know should I get further with brltty on windows. I forgot to say that you may find the -d option useful as well to inform brltty how your display is connected. Brltty should not depend on libbraille, except in the case when you try and use it through its libbraille driver. Brltty has its own ALVA driver which has no need for libbraille. Have you tried specifying the ALVA driver? You can start brltty with the ALVA driver by using the -b option, such a command as: brltty -b al You may want other options. I have had my ALVA 544t working like this. Also what version of brltty were you using? Does any of this help? Hi all, I still haven't got my braille display working with libbraille. I've tried 2 different computers, and both usb and COM (through a usb->com adapter). No luck. The simpletest program can initialize the COM port, but always gets invalid responses from the Alva device, or any other driver for that matter. There is no sign of life whatsoever from the braille display, other than a bleep. In the meantime I've also tried to get Brltty working without luck. It seems that the (unofficial) windows release is depending on libbraille as well. I guess that's the reason why it doesn't make a difference. So far JAWS is the only application that worked for my display, which seems to be using the official Alva drivers (ABT.dll). The libraries (libbraille / brltty) can't use that right? I don't know what to do. Tororrow I will try a different display but I don't have very high hopes. If somebody can think of anything obvious I might be missing please let me know. Hi Michael, Thanks a lot for this information. My Alva does indeed have a serial port, and using it is a good idea if it can make a difference like you said. Unfortunately both my computers (Dell inspiron and Mac Pro) don't have a serial port. I'm sure there must be a way around that. USB->serial converter or something;) Otherwise I can find an old computer to test it for now. I will have have a look at brltty for sure. I was searching around for an alternative before, but couldn't find any. Hello, I can't answer what is wrong, but can you connect to the display through a serial connection (I don't know if all the ALVA displays have serial ports, but my 544t does and I believe so does the standard 544)? I never managed to get libbraille to connect to my ALVA display using USB in Windows. You may also wish to look at brltty instead of libbraille, this is the way NVDA is going for braille display support. From what I can tell brltty is more actively developed than libbraille. I also have had more success with brltty. Hope some of this helps. Hi list, I'm new to libbraille and I'm trying to use it on Windows and OSX. First off I started with Windows, but I can't seems to get it to work. I've installed the libusb drivers and it is detecting my braille bar (Alva 544 usb). The problem is that both the SimpleTest application and my own code give me an error on initialization. Below is a sample of my code. The output I get is: "Error initialising libbraille: Braille driver initialization failed: Error setting configuration: No error" The no error message isn't really helpful;) I guess it is at least detecting the device, because if I disconnect the braille bar I get: "Error initialising libbraille: Braille driver initialization failed: No Alva USB display detected" As you can see below, I've tried different ways of specifying the paths, as I don't know what the right way is. All to no avail. So I figured I'd try libbraille on OSX, but I can't even get it to compile. I'm not very experienced with this stuff so please bear with me. I first executed the shell script "autogen_mac.sh". This gave me the warnings about AM_PATH_GLIB_2_0 and AM_PATH_GTK_2_0 not found. I installed GTK+ but that didn't solve it. What am I missing? Can someone explain to me how to generate the configuration files for OSX? Best, Thijs void MyOb::createDevice() { braille_debug(8); braille_config(BRL_PATHDRV, "c:\\libbraille\\drivers"); braille_config(BRL_PATHTBL, "c:\\libbraille\\tables"); braille_config(BRL_DRIVER, "alvausb"); braille_config(BRL_TABLE, "american.tbl"); braille_config(BRL_PATH, "c:\\libbraille"); for(int i = 0; i < braille_drivernum(); i++) { post("driver [%d]: %s, supporting models: %s\n", i, braille_drivername(i), braille_drivermodels(i)); } for(int i = 0; i < braille_tablenum(); i++) { post("table [%d]: %s, corresponding to: %s\n", i, braille_tablename(i), braille_tabledesc(i)); } if(!braille_init()) { error("Error initialising libbraille: %s\n", braille_geterror()); return; } post("Libbraille version %s initialised correctly \n" \ "with driver %s using terminal %s with %d cells on device %s\n", braille_info(BRL_VERSION), braille_info(BRL_DRIVER), braille_info(BRL_TERMINAL), braille_size(), braille_info(BRL_DEVICE)); } |

Hi Eric, you may find this thread interesting: http://coding.derkeiler.com/Archive/Delphi/borland.public.delphi.non-technical/2007-05/msg01472.html It talks about some ways to call C libraries from Pascal or Delphi. A few excerpts: "There is h2pas.exe in FPC distribution if you have C headers." "An example on how to make it by hand: http://coding.derkeiler.com/Archive/Delphi/borland.public.delphi.non-technical/2007-05/msg01478.html " A few articles related to this problem: http://rvelthuis.de/articles/articles-cppobjs.html http://rvelthuis.de/articles/articles-cobjs.html http://rvelthuis.de/articles/articles-convert.html Also there seems to be a beta version of swig for delphi: http://www.wmhelp.com/download/swig-delphi.rar Since libbraille already provides a SWIG file to generate some wrappers for various languages, it may be straightforward using this tool to generate the delphi wrapper. regards -- Se'bastien Sable' Erich Haupt a e'crit : > Do you know any possibility to call libbraille written in 'C' from > within a FreePascal-Program (www.freepascal.org)? Thank you, Michael and Samuel! Based on your replies I again had searched the internet and came to SuSE Linux and its out-of-the-box 'blinux' daemon. Possibly this daemon together with a primitive text-only web browser in a naked console session will be the solution for my problem. > 1. Re: Calling from FreePascal or Borland Delphi? (Michael Whapples) I'll see this with one laughing and one weeping eye. Our organization currently uses only MS Windows workstations and so it would be a premiere and need several persuasion work. But why not? In my personal opinion Linux is fine! Do you know any possibility to call libbraille written in 'C' from within a FreePascal-Program (www.freepascal.org)? How to do? If there is one for calling from Borland Delphi, the same system and syntax could be used for FreePascal. I'm an dilettante FreePascal programmer and try to adapt our web-based in-house telephone register for being usable by a braille display. TIA for every response! Erich |
