Thanks for the clear explanation. Nice to know. I just have one  
observation: those changes were the first ones done to the main code  
right after the 3.98 release. Is it desired to merge them back into  
the 3.98.1 release?

No problems with that. And it would nice if we could better  
coordinate on things just like you did with the structure that  
generated some noise in CVS. This way, we don't step onto each  
other's toes. (Just a proposal).
