Hello, this page states that Kplayer can play audio CDs:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=248936

However, I couldn't figure out from the interface or the
documentation how to do this.

I tried opening /dev/cdrom which works with Kscd, but
that doesn't work in kplayer.

I get this error in the logs:
###
Failed to open /dev/rtc: No such file or directory
(mplayer should be setuid root or /dev/rtc should be
readable by the user.)
######

mplayer is already setuid root and /dev/rtc doesn't exist
on my system.

You can try opening a URL of the form cdda://5, where 5 is the
song number you want to listen. This and other kinds of URLs
mplayer understands are found in the mplayer manpage.

I will add this to the README.

I tried "cdda://5" with a CD in the drive. Kplayer accepted the
URL and showed it in it's title bar, but nothing happened. It
acted like it was an acceptable zero-length file. If it can't play
the URL for some reason, I would prefer that it emit some kind
of error message rather than silently fail liike this.

It would also be nice if the completion system in the "open
URL" window would give hints about possible formats, such as
showing "cdda://" as possibly completion before I start typing.

(to kplayers credit, when I tried "cdda://5" in mplayer, it
converted it to "http://cdda://5" and returned an error-- I
couldn't get it play from their, either. Still, I think Kplayer
should fail more gracefully when mplayer doesn't do what it
    expects.

If your MPlayer doesn't understand a cdda: URL, you just
may have a rather old MPlayer. Works for me. :-)

Again, error handling is on the ToDo list.

I added the note about playing CDs, DVDs and stuff to
README. It will be in the documentation when that comes.

Error handling is working now. The current CVS version is
slated to become the 0.3 release by the end of the first week
of August, so please test it now.

KPlayer 0.5.2, released today, finally comes with a user
manual. There is a micro-HOWTO on playing all kinds of CDs
in there. Also there is another micro-HOWTO on playing from
KDE I/O Slaves, which can also be used to play tracks from
an audio CD. So I am closing this case, unless you have more
    ideas.
