Nevermind, I should have checked the bug tracker first.
I think there should be some KPlayer config options to mask certain aarguments from being given to MPlayer to give users who don't want a bloated install a way around problems like this. Thoughts?

This happens when mplayer was not built with libass (yes, that's what it's called) to provide font support. Rebuild mplayer, configuring to include freetype, pango, and any other font-related stuff you find in configure --help, and the problem will go away.

KPlayer seems to break on newer versions of MPlayer due to it passing the -[no]embeddedfonts argument. I cannot play any videos. Sample output below.
