This same thing exists in After Effects too- use the ` (tilde) key (next to the 1 at the top left of keyboard) to maximize the section currently under the cursor. I use it daily, would be handy in kdenlive, though probably not as essential as Blender or AE.

Something like shift+space in blender perhaps? Instantly maximizes the "window" which is under the mouse cursor. This is very useful when there is not enough screen real estate and its quick when you get the hang of it.

auto-hiding it's not good imho, it's not natural and users would be
confused (and personally i want to see the timeline while i play with
the preview monitor). a button could be the right way

and so you'd leave visible the monitor and the resources list? why not
a fullscreen preview (at the moment i undock the monitor and expand it
to the whole screen), then? the list isn't that useful while you
preview a video, and probably it's also easier than moving away parts
of the gui (and less "crash-y")
