As a reminder, the wiki page contains info about the various plugins already available for Eclipse. Thanks to Andy Bulka for the detailed info on each plugin and setup. http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/moinmoin/EclipsePythonIntegration Some previous posts to the list about Eclipse. http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Mail/Message/jython-users/1659183 http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Mail/Message/jython-users/1628142 http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Mail/Message/jython-users/1630421 A large number of people have emailed me privately with interest in Eclipse and Jython integration as well as specific pieces of Eclipse they want to utilize in their Jython/Python work. Since I don't want to post those emails in their entirety or give out email addresses without permission, I'll just summarize some of the responses I've gotten so far. If you have sent me info privately, I encourage you to go ahead and send your comments to jython-users and/or add info to the wiki. I'm not going to list everyone, only those that indicated an interest in writing code and docs. If I forgot to mention you below, please just reply to this message. * Matt Conway is interested in helping out with python/eclipse integration. Matt has done a lot of work with Jython and also written a number of Eclipse plugins. It sounds like Matt may be the perfect person to lead an integration effort. * Frank Cohen has offered to write supporting documentation and articles. * Andy Bulka has provided some docs on the wiki for existing plugins. * Don Coleman has written a Jython code completion shell, which he is interested in porting to Eclipse. * Samuele Pedroni provided a detailed list of integration possibilities. Samuele could you repost to the list? * The following people also offered to help: Nick Okasinski (willing to come up to OSCON), Jeremy Hylton, Thomas Derflinger * Paul Buck and John Duimovich have offered to provide project space at eclipse.org and help provide some answers to the technical team working on integration. Pieces of the puzzle (needs expansion and more detail, see wiki page) = Some Eclipse features people want with Jython/Python = * project/file management (module organization) * package explorer * file manipulation (history, compare, replace, etc) * collapsible code outlining * integrated step-through debugging * UML * refactoring tools (rename of classes and methods) * indentation support (tab / backtab) * outline with classes and methods * search for references (who calls method X) * execution of code snippets from a file being edited * use the Eclipse update manager for plug-in and core jython updates * incremental compilation of Jython * syntax highlighting and auto-completion = Eclipse would gain = * Python/Jython support in the editor * this is what the existing plug-ins address, but they are incomplete * better scriptable customization * use Jython as the "glue" language for extending Eclipse * runtime interactive shell for trying and testing Java classes * Jython unit tests of Java classes instead of JUnit? * simplifies mixing Jython/Java to broaden range of problems that can be solved * large user base of Jython/Python programmers ka --- Kevin Altis al...@se... http://altis.pycs.net/ http://www.pythoncard.org/ ps. I will be away from email from this Friday through early July. Hopefully, someone else on jython-users can help drive progress on this topic the rest of June. I'll be back in the saddle at OSCON and plan to talk to Paul Buck... at that time. |
