Hi there,=20 Yes, I've followed the instructions in the FAQ about classpaths! = Nothing's worked and I'm well and truly stuck...help! I'm using Java version 1.4.1_01 (checked using java -version) on Win98 = and have downloaded the jython-21.class file into directory C:\Jython. Acording to autoexec.bat, I have the following classpath: SET = PATH=3Dc:\vtk40\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\jre\bin;%PATH% set CLASSPATH=3Dc:\vtk40\bin\vtk.jar;. Does Jython need to be somewhere in there? What should it look like? I get the dreaded java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError for the following = commands: >java jython-21 >java -cp . jython-21 >java -cp -classpath c:\Jython\jython-21.class Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Chi-chi |

Chi-chi, Did you open the command line to the directory in which you have placed the jython-21.class file, i.e., c:/jython in your case? You should then just be able to type "java jython-21" from that directory. jython-21 is the installer for jython and this should be all you need to install jython. If you're getting the "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError" you're probably NOT in the c:/jython directory when you type the command "java jython-21". If this doesn't work, can you send back the exact error message? That would help us help you debug. Hi! I re-read my post and had a feeling someone might think that. No, it's not that...see my command line output below: C:\Jython>java jython-21 Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: jython-21 I'm scouring thru every Jython newbie post I can find. My classpath now looks like this: SET PATH=c:\vtk40\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\jre\bin;c:\jython;%P ATH% Still no joy, though. Ta very muchly*! But I don't think that's your problem, since you have the right one first. > set CLASSPATH=c:\vtk40\bin\vtk.jar;. I always put . first in the CLASSPATH, but I doubt order really matters here, since vtk.jar probably doesn't contain a class called jython-21. > Does Jython need to be somewhere in there? What should it look like? . should cover it, as long as you run jython-21 from the $JYTHON_HOME directory. > I get the dreaded java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError for the following commands: > > >java jython-21 > >java -cp . jython-21 > >java -cp -classpath c:\Jython\jython-21.class The first two are legal, and either should work, assuming you're running them from c:\jython. (The first relies on . being in your CLASSPATH; the second does not.) Actually, jython-21 runs fine for me even with an empty CLASSPATH and no -cp argument, though that behavior may not be portable. The third line is illegal. I don't see anything you're doing wrong. Maybe your Jython download was bad. My jython-21.class is 2780547 bytes. If yours is shorter, re-download. Go to http://java.sun.com/tutorial and work through the simple "Hello World" tutorial, to verify that you have a working Java setup. If you can't get Hello World to work either, then I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling your Java Development Kit. -- David Ripton dr...@ri... |

Phew, I now have Jython installed. Thanks loads everyone. >Oti: try java -classpath c:\Jython jython-21 Cheers but it wasn't that. Checked it anyway before downloading again from another continent. :o) This is what it was: After downloading it, Windows saved the jython-21.class file as "jython-21.class..class.". Don't ask me why! After a million classpath changes and restarts, I spotted this and renamed the file. Then 'java jython-21' did the biz. Maybe this is a new problem with version 2.1 as a lot of other people seem to have install problems... Now for my next question. I've installed it twice now :o) both with and without the console but I don't get anything other than this: C:\Jython>jython #I enter 'jython' at the prompt, something happens really quickly then the command line returns like so: C:\Jython> Am I missing something *really* obvious? Thanks for your suggestions. Keep 'em coming! Typing in the .bat file line for line in DOS did nowt. chi-chi, Let's start simple and try typing the line below in (you can't cut and paste since windows typically puts a newline in between and screws up the line): "c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01\bin\java.exe" "-Dpython.home=C:\Jython" -classpath "C:\Jython\jython.jar" org.python.util.jython This is assuming you have java in j2sdk1.4.1_01 and the jython.jar is in fact in c:/jython (this is from my .bat file - I've left out the %ARGS% argument and the loop, since it's not needed for this basic test). You mention the compiler did this, but the compiler shouldn't be being used. And you shouldn't be getting the quick flash of something, since you are in the DOS window to start. I've tracked down a Windows 98 machine and I have been able to duplicate this problem. The machine is running Win98 SE and JRE 1.4.1_01 I saved jython-2.1.class to c:\. I opened a command prompt to c:\ and installed with "java jython-21". I installed Jython to c:\jython-2.1 and everything worked OK. I installed a 2nd copy of Jython to c:\jython. **This time I checked "no console window" under Java Options on the 2nd install screen.** The 2nd copy wouldn't display a jython prompt. I created a test file that created a JFrame. This worked! You can try this with "jython test.py" assuming you copy test.py to the directory where jython is installed. My suggestion: 1) Uninstall or delete both copies of Jython and all jython.bat files. 2) Reinstall Jython and do NOT check "no console window" On Wed, 2003-03-26 at 12:51, Stephen C. Chi-chi, Try typing the lines, one at a time, from the .bat file directly at a dos prompt. Sounds like something is not set properly (ok, maybe a bit of the obvious ;-) The title line that you have looks OK, .... ?? HTH steve Chi-chi Ekweozor wrote: > > You should be seeing a >>> prompt.
