in a previous post I was asking whether c-extensions that work with CPython can be imported in Jython. As mentioned also in the FAQ (http://www.jython.org/archive/22/userfaq.html#id4) the answer is no.

After thinking a little bit about the extensions, it is obvious that the functions in the compiled shared libraries must be quite different for either Python or Java (JNI).

I am wondering if there have been any attempts to make extensions compiled for CPython available to Jython nevertheless? It should be possible to put a second wrapper around the CPython extension module that makes the function calls available to Java classes through JNI.
I have no idea if this approach would save any effort or if it is easier to reimplement the existing SWIG wrapper (which is quite involved) for Java instead of Python.
Just asking whether anybody has been thinking about this before.
