  We tried the route you suggested but the requirement was more to go with pure OpenSSL than the java specific libraries.
  It would be very nice to see the PyOpenSSL module in Jython. It can be a very powerful interface to openssl via Java.

I haven't heard of an OpenSSL wrapper, but the new socket module at
least has client side SSL support through Java's libraries:
