You can try to install OpenJDK and run it that way.  Landon Fuller has compiled a version that works on OSX called Soylatte.  This will give you JDK 1.6 on OSX.  See my tip for this month's newsletter here:

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but at least if you get it working with 1.6 then you can port it to other operating systems...
