I'm new to Netbeans and jVi. Is it possible to use jVi only for editing files of specific extensions? e.g I'd only like to edit xml, css and js files with jVi. I know I can enable/disable jVi from the tools menu, but it'd be great if it was automatic.

You can drag the jVi enable action to the toolbar, then you can tell at a glance if jVi is enabled; you can bind the jvi enable toggle action to a keystroke. Both these things are done in the standard NB way.
Making it automatic sounds like it would be tricky and lead to ambiguous situations. You could file a feature request, but unless someone worked on it it wouldn't get much attention.
