Next attempt. If you don't like a singleton hack, how about pulling the
fail() methods out into a separate class, also with static methods? Then
those of us who want something else could override it in the classpath.
It's still not nice, but it means that we don't have to keep hacking the
source while we're waiting for the right solution.
