The new beta doesn't have a Macintosh-specific installer and I can't figure out how to run or compile it from the Platform-Independent source file.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

no, it ain't a dumb question at all ;-)
Without having a mac myself I have to rely on others for the build, and Tristan fixed some problems with the mac build only recently.
I hope to release a beta4 version soon, where there should be a mac version as well.

Otherwise, if you can't wait and feel experimental, the following might(!) work: Use the Linux version, replace the swt jar with the mac swt jar from the source package/platform/macosx and try to start pwsafe.sh
