John, here's my opinion. The 1.3 version's handling of CC7 and CC11 is much different from 1.2. For personal reasons I'll not set the CC7 in the jOrgan disposition file - I have to do it in the soundfont. The CC7 volumization of the ranks ("voicing") done in the soundfonts causes strong voicing changes if interpreted by the new FS 1.3 volumization table. I haven't recognized a matrix how the sound changes yet. But - finally that means, an soundfont voicing created using FS 1.2 cannot be performed as intended with FS 1.3, at all - and reverse. The sound character of the ranks rendering in FS 1.3 is changed, too. More brightness, clearer attacks, more "reality" (less "electric" ) in the sound. In v. 1.2 the ranks middle ranges have more mass, beside the complete other interpretation of CC7. The attack crispness quality is best at Creative hardware synths, followed by FS 1.3. The "reverberation" of FS is nothing what should be used seriously, in my ears. May be one could arrange quite a nice bathroom or garage environment, but that's all I'm afraid. Personally, after some trials I rejected all VST approaches out of my imagination. If I'd have enough of money, personally I'd outsource the convolution reverb machine to the amplifier chain. Presently I use the native SoundBlaster EAX of the Live! Platinum, like GrahamH, who uses an additional old Win98 PC just only for this special quality reverb. Some months ago I realized the ancient Realtek AC97 (used in 1998 and following years) has a built-in reverb machine (hidden in the system, I never realized it was there) which is of nearly the same quality and configuration ability as the SB Live Platinum EAX. Unfortunately I gave away all my old mainboards. If I'd have much of money, I'd hire a programmer for a reverb extension for jOrgan, orienting towards the professional convolution reverb machines available for amplifier systems. Juli 2009 23:14 Betreff: [jOrgan-user] FluidSynth sound (Bernd's comments) I have made a new thread because of the importance of this topic. Bernd, in your opinion, in what way does the sound rendered by FluidSynth version 1.3 differ from that rendered by FS version 1.2? My early problem with FluidSynth (as compared with sfz) was its poor latency. That does seem to have been overcome. I now find the latency acceptable, although I think it is still discernible. However, I do not like its reverberation sound, and I far prefer to make use of independent reverberation. In my case, I find Omniverb, a VST plugin, very nice indeed.
