First of all: Thanks for giving us such a lightweight, flexible, fast,
powerful, portable editor. We enjoyed it's features for many years.
But since we have to switch to utf8 coding (gtk2) it looks like the era
of joe use within our programmers' team is going to end.
I tried to use joe with an utf8 capable terminal (xterm -u8) and an utf8
encoded locale (de_DE.UTF-8). Joe switches to show-metachars off (it's
normal default is on - so it clearly recognizes that ISO-8859-1 is no
longer at hand), once I turn it on again, the characters are shown
correctly. But the cursor movement starts to get flaky (of course, since
bytes and onscreen charakters are not in sync any more).
Does anybody have a recommendation? Is joe theoretically able to cope
with multibyte charakters or should I switch to a different editor as
fast as possible.
PS: Version is joe_2.8-20_powerpc.deb from debian/sid
PPS: I tested that locale and terminal settings are correct with
different programs (e.g. ls --help / less), which all behave as expected.
P3S: Simple testcase for utf-8: enter a line with non ascii characters,
then try to move the cursor right through it.
