Recently 'assert' statements have been creeping into the
code base. Asserts are a Java 1.4 feature. Go to the properties under
the project menu, select 'java compiler' then select 'use workspace
settings' and press the 'configure workspace settings.' button, go to
'compliance and classfiles' tab, uncheck 'Use default compliance
settings', and set both 'generate .class file compatability' and 'Source
compatability' to 1.4, hit OK a couple of times and the project should
    build correctly.
