So yesterday, I'm in my office making some lcaoCartoons before class, and all seems to be going well. I'm writing the page on a fully updated OS X 10.4.11 MacBook Pro and testing the pages on my PowerMac G5 that, I hadn't noticed, had not had Apple's latest security update installed. Right before going to class, I pull the page up on my MBC just to make certain it would work on the computer that I bring to class and it didn't. When hitting the button to run the script nothing happened and the applet became unresponsive. I thought, "Wow, why do PPC Macs (running OS X 10.4.11) behave differently than Intel Macs (OS X 10.4.11)?" Then while trying to reinstall software on my Intel mac (reinstalling Java, etc) just in case something had gotten hosed, I ran software update on my G5 and installed the latest security update (for OS X 10.4.11) from Apple. Suddenly, the lcaoCartoons stopped working on my PPC. I should note that all the other scripts that I've written still work (creating isosurfaces, moving models around, measuring angles, changing bonds and atoms using wireframe/spacefill). Only drawing lcaoCartoons stopped working. So, the big question, it it just me or are other Mac users having issues with lcaoCartoons only fully updated installations of 10.4.11? wow, that's wild. I assure you, there is absolutely nothing about lcaoCartoons that would do this. Must be something else. What version of Jmol are you running on those machines? Please check the latest release. OK, I took a lot of investigating and the realization that java applets get cached to figure this all out. The problem has nothing to do with the security update. The update must have masked a switch from a working cached version of the Jmol applet to the newer (11.8.5) version of Jmol that doesn't work. It's 11.8.5. lcaoCartoon is broken in 11.8.5. When I serve Jmol versions 11.2.12, 11.4.RC8, and 11.6.21 lcaoCartoon works on my Macs. When I serve 11.8.5 lcaoCartoon doesn't work on my Macs. Incidentally, Jmol 11.9.5_dev on this page http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/docs/examples-11/lcao.htm isn't working for me either. Why is it SO hard to get a client and a server to agree to use the older version when rolling back Jmol?! And how can a browser load Jmol 11.6.21 in one window and then open Jmol 11.8.5 in a new window ! And why does it matter which address I use? When I access the page using http://wine-and-crackers.local/~cjmasi/chem/organic/hybrids/ch2cl2.html or http://192.168.2.46/~cjmasi/chem/organic/hybrids/ch2cl2.html I get Jmol 11.6.21 (which is what is currently in the server folder) But when I access the page using http://127.0.0.1/~cjmasi/chem/organic/hybrids/ch2cl2.html I get the 11.8.5 which I took out of the server folder (I've issued a apachectl graceful, then an apachectl restart, and I've restarted my computer since replacing 11.8.5 with 11.6.21) All three addresses refer to the same Mac Chris On Sep 19, 2009, at 12:19 PM, Robert Hanson wrote: > wow, that's wild. Chris, That's fixed for 11.8.6. Nico, could you please release that? As for clearing the applet, the Java cache is completely different from the "browser cache." All you have to do with all the browsers I've worked with is close the browser and reopen it to get it to read an updated applet. You have to make sure all the windows are closed. > -- Robert M. Generally yes, but I don't understand what's is going on with my installation of Apache on OS X 10.4.11. My MBP is supposed to be serving Jmol 11.6.21 (at least that is what in installed in directory that the pages refer to, 11.8.5 was previously installed in that location). Yet whether the client browser, on the same machine or another machine, uses 11.6.21 or 11.8.5 depends on which supposedly but apparently not equivalent address is used to access the page. Safari (4.0.3) and Firefox (3.5.3) both behave the same way. Weird, but that's not your problem. Thanks again, Chris >> > > > > -- > Robert M. OK - the fixed files are in http://chemapps.stolaf.edu/jmol/docs/examples-11/Jmol-11.jar. Let me know if you have any more problems with that.
