i realized that i had done something stupid. i had put in a call to
jmolDebugAlert() like so:

OK ... that explains the behavior you are observing :-)
One purpose of jmolDebugAlert is to allow one to see the HTML code that i=
generated by the calls into the Jmol.js library.
Don't hesitate to ask when you run into other issues.
