#5 XML output doesn't handle XML characters

With any of the XML output files, if a string contains an
XML reserved character (like <, > or &), the character is
just output as is rather than as the proper XML entity
(&lt;, &gt; &amp;, etc). The result is that the file
becomes unreadable.
