I'm making a few changes to the JFreeChart development process with the
aim of making it easier for others to join in with the ongoing
development of the project. Starting immediately, the JFreeChart
project will adopt some of the collaborative development techniques that
I've seen successfully employed by the GNU Classpath project (and others):
(1) A new mailing list (jfreechart-patches@...) for
discussion and review of all patches to the JFreeChart CVS repository;
(2) A new ChangeLog file will be maintained showing details of all
changes to CVS;
(3) I will encourage the use of this list
(jfreechart-developers@...) for general discussion
between developers that wish to collaborate on the project (this list is
NOT for user support - please go to the forums at http://www.jfree.org for that).
Later today I will also be removing inactive developers from the
SourceForge project page - anyone that is registered as a developer on
the project and wishes to remain active should contact me.
Regarding CVS, there is a branch (STABLE_1-0-0) for the 1.0.0 release
which will be released before the end of this year. No API changes
should be made on this branch without getting approval first.
The CVS trunk contains a raft of changes that I've made for a client
project, and needs cleaning up before it is ready for general usage. I
will prepare an overview of the architectural changes that have been
made in the trunk, to assist anyone that is interested in working on
it. For now, I'd recommend sticking to the STABLE_1-0-0 branch.
I will be working a little harder than I have previously to encourage a
developer community to build around JFreeChart. I think this is
important because although the project has benefitted from many
contributions over the last 5 years, we have few active developers to
keep JFreeChart moving forward, and a growing list of bugs and patches
in the database at SourceForge that need to be dealt with.
I will put together some web pages to provide information for potential
contributors over the next couple of weeks. Any questions or comments
should be posted to this list. Thanks for reading to the end!
