I've noticed the slowness even when jEdit has no open buffers at all. I attributed it just to windows, java and the page file because it doesn't seem to be quite as laggy on a Linux box. Of course, my Windows box is a laptop with not much memory and the Linux box is pretty high power with 2+ gig of memory.
