Hi David, I tried to reproduce your problem, and while I found a couple of issues which are now fixed in CVS, I couldn't see your particular issue. When this happens do you get anything (stack trace, WARNING or ERROR message) on the avtivity log? It could also help if you could hit CTRL+\ when running jEdit from a terminal and getting the backtraces that are printed (although I don't know if that's the way it works on Windows).
