I think the MFC (MS Visual Studio) solution to this problem is very slick:
there is a fairly small button with just an X in it in the upper right
hand corner of the docked window, near the split pane adjuster. This is a
strikingly obvious way to close the dockable window.
Although this button is completely apparent, users may also be accustomed
to using context menus to accomplish actions. As such, it would also be a
good idea to use a right-click menu to the tab. However, along with the
'Close' menu item, one could toggle or select a few different options as
well like a checked menu item that toggles 'Auto-Open,' and how about a
series of items such as 'Move to Right Pane' 'Move to Bottom Pane' etc.
So, you might have on a small context-menu (right-click):
[ ] Floating
[ ] Right
[ ] Top
[ ] Bottom
And of course, as has been mentioned, this would be configurable by the
plugin so that it can add new entries if desired.
