Hello,
I have quite long abstracts and excerpts of my bibtex entries. For searching and reading my entries I use the entry preview that interprets html. Thereby I can rather easily add some formatting into the abstract field e.g. by adding the html tag to put headers into bold letters.
However this coding is quite time consuming. I think it would be very easy to implement a very small wysiwsg editor that can be activated by a button or so, that pops up a window. There the abstract coulb be entered using buttong like [B][I][U] and may be some more basic formatting options. A push button could create the simple html code out of it and push it e.g. into the abstract field.
Afterwards you can enjoy reading your entries in the entry preview field.
unfortunately I have no skills in java at all...

We currently see following alternatives:
Regarding options 1 and 2: We should patch them to offer a possibility to link to other bibtex entry using the pandoc syntax
[@ref]or the MultiMarkDown4 syntax[#ref].I disregard other options such as using the http://zim-wiki.org/ as markdown is an accepted markup format now and .bib files are still plain text.
Finally, we could use HTML and some Java HTML WYSIWYG editor (in case there is one), but I'd prefer markdown because it's easier to edit manually than editing HTML manually.
