Alright.. I wanted to give people an update on the performance tweaking and updates that we have done. Ming (and Ross) suggested that we needed to align our partions to improve performance. There are two levels at which this needs to be done: 1. The Vmware VMFS Level. 2. The Guest Virtual Hard Drive Level. As I stated before, ESX 3 will automatically align the filesystems when you create a new VMFS filesystem. A detailed description of this process, and why it is important can be found here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_partition_align.pdf However, the partitions on the virtual hard drives for our guests were not aligned, and Ming identified this as a potential speed bottleneck. He was write. We did some highly scentific tests, using Aligned and Non-Aligned partitions, using 1 Gig files and dd to test read/write throughput. Summary: By using aligned partitions in our guests, we were able to achieve a 302% increase (Yes, three hundred and two) in WRITE speed to the array and a 7.6% increase in read speed. I'm now able to sustain 60-80 Megabytes / second of write speed, whereas I was only able to push about 18 Megabytes before. That's AWESOME! ;) Thanks a ton. We're not completely finished yet, but we're definitely on the right track! -- Vice President of N2Net, a New Age Consulting Service, Inc.
