The ObexCode Proxima Browser is an IrDA GUI application for Linux that will
finally make it possible to utilize IrDA enabeled devices with Linux in a
more user friendly way. The Proxima Browser is targeted for PDAs, laptops
and normal PCs running Linux, and will be a commercial alternative to
o GNOME/GTK+ user interface
o 100% user-space implementation written in C. Includes a full featured IrDA
stack. Runs on any Linux kernel, any recent Linux distribution
o Displays all devices in range, lists all services for each device. Uses a
persistent cachelog to remember all your favorite devices and friends
o Dial-up (IrCOMM) support. Connect to any IrDA enabled mobile phone for
dial-up networking, or for attaching (virtual) infrared serial ports that
you can use yourself for minicom etc. Has been successfully tested with
Nokia, Ericsson and Siemens mobile phones using GSM (high speed) data and
o Direct networking (IrCOMM) support. Connect two laptops/PDAs with each
other for ad-hoc networking
o File exchange (IrOBEX) support. Exchange business cards or any other type
o Commercial software. Binaries only.
o Small footprint. Uses very little disk space and memory.
We are looking for a limited amount of people that want to participate in
beta testing of this application. If you are interested then please send me
a short mail that includes "PROXIMA BROWSER BETA TEST PROGRAM" in the
subject field, and in the body you should include:
o Your name and company
o Computer you are using (Linux distribution, kernel version)
o IrDA devices you can test with. Please list name and version (Ericsson
T39, Palm m505 etc)
o IrDA dongles (if any)
o Do you consider yourself a power user, normal user or inexperienced user?
We are interested in all.
(we reserve us the right to deny people from joining the beta test program)
The beta versions will be provided as tar archives containing binaries for
i586, and should run on any recent Linux distribution from Redhat, Mandrake
and many others. Binaries for other architectures might be provided later in
the beta program.
We look forward to hear from you!
