You were getting more bandwidth than expected because Linux (and other
OSes) will automatically increase the TCP window size.  Google
for tcp_moderate_rcvbuf, for example.  One way to actually get the window
sizes you expect is to use the -w argument to iperf.  Note that linux will
double what you specify (so if you specify 128K, it will use 256K
internally).
