For those who do not already know, the IPCop mailing lists are covered
by Gmane lists that act as an intermediary news server. With any
newsgroup reader, either standalone or using the NNTP feature of
Thunderbird for example, the server is news.gmane.org and the port is
standard NNTP 119. This is an open server and does not need to be logged
Why am I reminding you of this or telling you this for the first time
if you are new here? Because it's a much better way to read the lists in
threads and respond to the list while keeping the thread integrity. As
it is, we end up with a bunch of chopped up threads here due to the
methods people use to respond.
Using Gmane, you can still respond to the group and an individual at
the same time as you would in any newsgroup as a courtesy. Also
important is the fact that the first time you use your newsreader to
respond to a list you are subscribed to, gmane will ask a few things of
you to ensure your human existence and remind you that you need to be
subscribed to the lists you are responding to or it will bounce. Fair
enough. This only has to be done once for each list, it remembers you
until you change emails etc.
I should mention that other mailing lists such as LCDproc, LCD4Linux
and so forth are also accessible via Gmane's NNTP server. Enjoy!
