Hi, all.

With the price of usb pen drives going to the floor, it would be great to have the possibility to eliminate the hdd all together, and install ipcop directly into a usb pen drive. Compact Flash Cards all still to expensive.

Some other distros already have that option like Knoppix 6.0. Check here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/installing-knoppix-60-to-a-usb-flash-drive/

Thanks!

This is already possible on the to be 2.0 futur version. Not so sure it is wise to do that on 2.4 kernel as usb stack is not able to recover in some cases that 2.6 support.

Do not hope the same service level from an usb key as a compact flash device plugged to an IDE port or SATA.
First, usb stack is not as solid as IDE for data transfer.
If you plug a second usb key to make a backup while there is writes to the first key, what will happen?

Secondly usb key are probably not designed for permanet usage.

Not all compact flash are equal but the wear leveling service build inside each chip narrowly depend of the brand. Industrial grade device should be better but wear leveling is a fabrication secret, with not so much information available to customer.

With cheap usb device constantly plugged in, life duration will probably be worse.

And with 2GB flash devices at 10 euros,4 GB at 12 euros I no more consider the device expensive.
