How is this being served? When i try:

    http://x.x.x.x/fcgi-bin/iipsrv.fcgi?OBJ=IIP,1.0&FIF=test.tif&obj=IIP,1.0&obj=Max-size&obj=Tile-size&obj=Resolution-number

the server just sends me a .fcgi file containing the resquested info. Even on your demo page, i tried and it did the same thing. How is javascript getting the info here?

    Im using lighttpd

The javascript client makes this request using an AJAX call. It then simply parses the contents of the reply to extract the relevant information.

      http://merovingio.c2rmf.cnrs.fr/fcgi-bin/iipsrv.fcgi?FIF=/home/eros/iipimage/Louvre.tif&obj=IIP,1.0&obj=Max-size&obj=Tile-size&obj=Resolution-number

I tried it on your demo page and it does the same thing, sends me a .fcgi to download. In this file it has the requested info. Does the Request object handle this differently than going to the url above?
