[htdig] how ht://dig "scores"

Dear list,

Please reply or lead me to the place where I can find out in detail how
ht://dig decides the "Score" of a search criterion (which places more stars
for a higher score).  I've read in the FAQs about making more recent
documents higher in score, etc...but I did not see detailed documentation on
how certain pages are ranked higher than others.  Are counters placed for
each page that people link to for eg...?  How does ht://dig do it?

Sorry if this information is on the ht://dig site and I missed it.
