The second problem is usually the result of a problem with the external_parsers: statement in the configuration file. Either: there isn't one it contains an error it does not incude application/pdf there is an error in a preceeding statement. Alternatively, your previous installation included /usr/local/bin/acroread and your new one does not. Can't help with the first problem, what version of htdig is this?
