I limit the total amount of displayed results on a search to 300 by 
combining the following variables of the conf file:

matches_per_page:      20
maximum_pages:	15

20x15=300 (may be? :-)

Each page shows 20 matches and I only allow 15 of these pages.
I had the same problem before, and I did not find any other way to limit 
the number of matches.
