The "alternate work files" feature for htdig invoked with
the -a option consistently appends ".work" to every file
except db.words.db_weakcmpr. The alternate filename
for this file is db.words.db.work_weakcmpr. This makes
it much harder to script certain tasks around htdig. The
complications in the rundig script are a good example.

Could the alternate version for this file be renamed to
db.words.db_weakcmpr.work?

Unfortunately the "_weakcmpr" file handling is buried
a little too deep in the code to make it practical to
change the file name under the -a option. Later
versions of ht://Dig will eventually do away with
this file, but for now the only thing to do is to deal
with it as rundig does, which isn't a big complication,
or use an alternate setting of database_dir or
    database_base instead of using -a.

We plan to add a command line option for overriding
any attribute, which will make it easier to set an
    alternate database_dir from a script.
